Ski resort house
Mammoth is famous for its great natural beauty and is a year-round mountain resort. This is a vacation home that will take advantage of both the hot summer months as well as the long skiing season. For this variation in climate and use the house had to be very adaptable.
The composition distinctly expresses the individual rooms and their uses. These forms are tied together within a strong rectangular frame that protects the large glass walls from the strong summer sunlight, and outlines the views of the mountains beyond. The importance of the indoor/outdoor continuity of function and space creates both a physical and visual connection. An axis through the entire site continues through the house, perpendicular to the framing device, which behaves like a proscenium between the man-made and natural realms.
